My Opinion 4/15/08 - JB

The websites for the Los Angeles Times, The New York Post, and The Washington Post had stories featuring Sen. John McCain and his jumping into the fray with the “bitter” remark Sen. Barack Obama made. McCain repeated the sentiment of Sen. Hillary Clinton in criticizing Obama for his words.

McCain stopped short of saying that Obama sounded like an elitist, but stated that he disagreed and stood behind the small-town populations, similar to the avenue Clinton had taken.

The three newspapers highlighted different parts of McCain’s remarks at a meeting for the Associated Press, where all three candidates would eventually speak.

The Los Angeles Times focused on McCain and his backing of a federal shield law, and although reported on his critique of Obama, found McCain’s distancing himself from the Bush Administration more crucial in its reporting.

The New York Times featured a strong article centering at McCain’s response and joining Clinton in disdaining Obama’s comments. Obama responded though with quips about actions that the Republican party has taken over the years as being more out of touch with the everyday American than a few unsavory words on his part.

At the end of the article there was a brief mention of McCain’s backing of the shield law.

The Washington Post’s focal point was completely on the Obama controversy and McCain joining in on the war-of-words. The article went full circle from McCain to Obama to Clinton and finally to citizens and voters responding to the controversy.

As is the norm, a short statement by Obama nearly a week ago has turned into a three ring circus of he said she said. One liners and zingers and double speak is expected on the campaign trail and anything to push talk away from key facts and positions to meaningless words that wont truly affect a person’s credentials for the presidency is all too common in the race for the Whitehouse nowadays.
